On Saturday, October 25th, Scott and I ran our first marathon. It was a race called the Spinx Runfest held in downtown Greenville. We began training in June and trained for 4 1/2 months running three times a week. We weren't sure how we would make time to train and prepare, but thought we would take it one week at a time and see what happens. Slowly, a running group of friends and friends of friends formed as we spread the word of our training. Before we knew it we were running every Saturday morning with a great group of people. We were so blessed to have this incredible group and bonded quickly with them and enjoyed their company and encouragement! As the race approached, I was extremely nervous and filled with excitement. Scott and I talked about our "strategy" and how to pace ourselves to be sure we would be able to complete the whole 26.2 miles. We decided not to worry about staying together and to run our "own" race at our comfortable pace. However, once the race started we found ourselves naturally sticking together. After completing 13 miles together we realized that we needed to help and encourage each other. The second half of the race was difficult, especially after mile 17. Seeing family and friends there to cheer us on was a tremendous help! After mile 20, our muscles started to cramp and tighten up and it became painful. We just kept focusing on the finish and continued on. Finally after making it to the stadium, we ran inside around the field as our names were announced and we finished hand in hand. It was absolutely one of the hardest things I have ever done, but it was so worth it. Finishing with Scott made it much more special. What an amazing journey and such a sweet reward after many months of hard work. Thank you for an incredible experience Scott! I love you!
Before the race, in the rain!
